When speakers of American English ask an adult 'Where did you go to school?', they mean 'What college or university did you study in?'.
I'd like to see 'where' is what grammatically. It's in my belief that 'Did you go to school?' alone is a perfectly complete/correct sentence. But 'Where did you go to school?' is a thing that frustrates me. I'm satisfied with 'What school did you go to?' Yet, not knowing why and how 'Where did you go to school' means 'what college or university did you study in'?, I'm perplexed by the sentence itself 'Where did you go to school?'.
