Island in the middle of the street ?

Hello everyone,

In the following dialogue, what could be the best understanding of the words "an island"?

Somebody thought it as "a bus stop that is the center of the street, between two lanes, not by the sidewalk."

I am wondering whether that is correct or possibly any other interpretation, like "a raised part in the center of the street, for pedestrains."

hope to hear your opinion...

thanks in advance~

B: You'll see an island in the middle of the street.

A: You mean I cross the street?

B: Yes. There's a sign. You can't miss it.

It will be raised up above the street level.

It will be between the lanes of traffic going in each direction.
