Is/are with since?

Could you please say if, like 'have been' in the first below, it is possible to use 'are' with 'since' as in the second one?

They have been waiting since a long time ago.

They are waiting since a long time ago.

The combination "since ... ago" doesn't work well for me. We would normally say "waiting for a long time".

I know it's already been said, but I think it's so important that I want to say it again.

Whenever you see 'since ... ago' you should try to say it a different way.
