Following that 'There are a lot of people' is correct, is the following correct?

"There are an immense number of people there"

"The way the football teams played WAS/WERE immense"

"There are an immense number of people there" I would use 'is', as 'number' is singular "The way the football teams played WAS/WERE immense" The subject being 'the way', it takes a singular (was) verb. I'm not sure 'immense' is the word you want.

Oddly enough, "immense" is quite common in BrE, as a colloquial term for "particularly impressive". It often turns up in a footballing context, e.g.

1. Man U were immense today...

2. John Terry was immense at the back as McClaren's men survived a surge of late pressure from the home team...

Local sports reporters especially like it.
