Is/are

Hi. I just wrote an assay at school about Lord of the Flies. When I had it back after it had been corrected, i noticed some corrections that I' not shure if I agree with.

The most confusing correction is in this sentence (its only the last and important part of it): "And hunting and killing is/are on the menu." I had written "is", but my teacher had corrected it to "are". I do know basic english rules, including the is and are rules, but still I just can't accept the "are". I have spoken to a lot of people, who say different things, so what I wonder is if it is possible to choose between is and are in this particular sentence.

Hi Inger, First of all, let me warn you that I am not an expert, but simply someone who tries to help whenever possible. Having said that, I believe that your sentence makes use of the concept of notional concord (also known as notional agreement). See this link for an explanation and some good examples.

  • html I would like to draw your attention to this particular sentence: My admiration and love for her is without limit.
  • The way I understand it, you are trying to say that hunting and killing are part of a greater (implied) state or activity, and that they are intimately connected.
