Because you would not say: "I is the only friend you've got.". The form of "to be" has to be in agreement with the person.

[It is] I [who] am the only friend you've got.

According to me, as learnt ,with first person I basically ,' am' to be used.

Eg: It is- I am going to play not I is going to play.
