Is "yet" neccesary here?

I asked him whether his brother has come back yet.

May i know whether "yet" is a must in this sentence. I think i have heard this without yet but i aint sure whether it is grammartically correct. Thanks in advance.

yet : either way is fine. Your sentence has indirect speech, so it should read: I asked him whether his brother had come back (yet). Personally, I prefer to use or not when using whether .
