Is vs are

Amir: By the way, let’s go to a restaurant and eat something.

Ali: OK. I know a restaurant in which a variety of sea foods ..... served.


1) is

2) are

....

OED says: A plural verb is needed after a/an (large, wide, etc.) variety of…A variety of reasons were given.

I personally think "is" is also correct in this context.
