IS vs ARE

I am helping my sister write her homework and I don't know which of the two versions is correct:
"My favorite place in the whole world is the Seven Rila Lakes."
"My favorite place in the whole world are the Seven Rila Lakes."
I would appreciate it if someone helped me with this one.

The subject is "place", singular. It's really that simple. "The Seven Rila Lakes" are one place—it's like the Bahamas or the Rocky Mountains.

The verb owes its first allegiance to the subject:

My favorite place is the Seven Rila Lakes.
The Seven Rila Lakes are my favorite place.

However such compositions inevitably sound a little wrong, so it is a good idea to recompose if possible:

The Seven Rila Lakes are delightful to visit.
My favorite place is the Seven Rila L

Thank you so much enoon and Mister Micawber! I rewrote it like this: "My favorite place in the whole world is Rila mountain and in particular the Seven Rila Lakes." Is is it OK?

Yes, but capitalize 'Mountain'.
