Is very much

Do you use "very much" before "am/is/are" always? Isn't "Riding pillion on a horse is a medieval or renaissance thing very much" more correct?

"Riding pillion on a horse is very much a medieval or renaissance thing. After the introduction of decent coaching roads in Britain over the 18th century women and children and nonriders travelled by cart or coach or carriage rather than pillion."

"very much a" is an idiom that occurs before the descriptive expression you want to focus on as very accurate and true. In this usage you can't move it around to different places in the sentence.
