Is versus are

Please help with the following sentence. Emotion: sad

" Each of the climbers is/are reminded of the splendor and magnificence of God's great Earth."

I choose "are" to complete the sentence, but "is" was the correct answer.

Can someone please explain this to me?

The prepositional phrase "of the climbers" confuses the true subject. If you leave the prepositional phrase out you get this: Each (one) is / are reminded of the spendor... Would you still select "are"?
