Is usage of "for" okay?

he performed examination for banned substances in hair.

title says it all - is usage of "for" okay?
meaning: specialist performed examination in order to determine whether there are any banned substances in the hair.

What difference does THE make here? The sentence tells us what a person does as a job; then HAIR is a general idea, not referring to the hair of particular persons; then why THE?
