Is using "for" as "studying for" for this sentence wrong?

I had been studying for marketing for more than two years.

It seems odd to me. I study for an exam. I study marketing (or business, or French).

Philip, thanks as always. Now I understand I should not use "for" except when I want to describe to study for an exam.
