Is this usage of 'take' common?

I had to take about 1.5 hours to walk to school.

"It took about 1.5 hours to walk to school" sounds right to me, but is it possible to take "somebody" as a subject when you use "take?"

5 hours We don't say that. You might write such a number, but using decimal fractions all but eliminates the possibility of using 'about'. It took me about an hour and a half to walk to school.
