Is this the the correct place to put the comma in the following sentence

Sorry to sound so miserable, John but I hope that I will be in a better mood next time I see you.

I'm not sure I understand why you used "but". Changing that to two sentences might be better:
Sorry to sound so miserable, John. I hope (that) I will be in a better mood next time
