I like "thorn" here, but I think you mean "torn." Or possibly "thrown."

So, in my opinion, it should be "the economic crisis" or "economic crises" (without the article).

That would depend on how you count. Was there a crisis in Germany and other related crises beyond its borders? Are the 2009 crises well known enough to be particularized?
