1. Soldier son returned home a different man.

2. He hung up the phone a frightened man.

2. He hung up the phone a frightened man.

He hung up the phone, a frightened man. (should it be like this?)

or should I say, A frightened man hung up the phone.

Which sentence is grammatically correct?

Not sure on the grammar they both look alright to me, but the sentences say slightly different things. The first one implies that something frightened the man during the phone call, the second that he was frightened by something else.
