Is this sentence worded properly?

Is this sentence worded properly, particularly is it clear Szass Tam's host is the "foes"? Also, should I use 'them' or 'themselves' in referring to the Council's armies? The armies of the Council of Zulkirs used powerful magic to conceal their advance, and when they soon arrived at the Keep of Sorrows, they believed that they had successfully surprised Szass Tam’s host and trapped their foes between them/themselves and the fortress.
