Is this sentence odd?

Hello. Is the sentence below written in acceptable English? I am not confortable with it. Thank you.

These journals were selected from those found in the X database based on their subject (Biology), language (Chinese), and scope (they publish both theoretical and applied research).

Here's my attempt. I'm assuming you don't really mean whole journals but journal titles. If my assumption is wrong you can easily change it back to "journals".

These journal titles were selected from the X database on the basis of subject (biology), language (Chinese), and scope (theoretical or applied research).
