Is this sentence just a load of rubbish?

No sooner after the publication of John Philips’ Illustrations of the Geology of Yorkshire: Part I, the geology of the Yorkshire coast particularly Scarborough has been pensively argued amongst scholars.

to me it's just nonsense really. is it a good start to my essay? it seems quite redundant to me...

It has several errors. But the main point is that if you, the author, don't like it, then don't write it.. You normally research your topic, identify your main thesis and decide on your main points, all before you try to write your introduction.

This is an essay for high school. I have the information in front of me. I know what I have to do to answer the question. I sometimes struggle synthesising the information in my own voice.

What errors can you see in my sentence? How should I write it? It's only supposed to be an introductory sentence.

We need to know whether you want to say that the argument started immediately after the publication of this book or that the argument has been going on since the publication of the book. Do you wish to imply that the publication started the argument? Do you really want to say argue, or would debate or discuss be more suitable?

My information tells me that the book was the first bit of information about the subject, so I guess it started the debate in which people argued their point of view?

An argument occurs within a debate, right? Is this OK?

Broadly speaking, your introduction needs to
- frame the context for the topic, in a way that engages the reader's interest.
- clearly state the topic that will be addressed
- state your overall opinion or thesis about the topic
