Is this sentence grammatically correct?

"Although the findings were not representative of older Canadians, it demonstrated that the ideas of childless could not be easily described.:"

I'm not too sure if it's could not or cannot.

I'm writing a summary of a research article about childless older people in Canada. The studied sample size was not representative, but the results demonstrate that the definition of childless was not easy to define. (i.e many people have different opinions on childless)

Thank you in advance Emotion: smile

If 'it' refers to the findings, say 'they'. If not, it has to refer to something earlier in the context.
