Is this sentence grammatically correct?

Dear All:
I would appreciate your help in constructing a grammatically correct sentence to the effect of: "there will be a decrease in the level and the person wants to make sure the level does not decrease dramatically."

This is what I have right now: "He would like to keep the decrement in the level to a small extent."

Does this work? I would like to keep it as a single sentence.
Thank you so much!!

This is a follow up on my original post. I think this works better: "He would like to keep the decrement in the level as small as possible" Other suggestions are welcome. Thanks
