Is this sentence grammatically correct?

Upon inspection, the tabletop was found to be damaged; it was badly hit with something like a dagger pierced the side of box.

The tabletop was found to be damaged. It appears that something like a dagger pierced the side of the carton box which tabletop was packed in it.
