Is this sentence grammatically correct?

"I took the initiative to learn the skill and will take advanced courses to strength my profile."

I feel there should be a comma before the and, but the clause after the and doesn't seem like an independent clause.

If it were:
"I took the initiative to learn the skill, and I will take advanced courses to strength my profile." The addition of that new I makes the second part an independent clause and consequently, requires a comma now.
