It is normally used if the reference is to the future: I wish it wouldn't rain tomorrow.'

I wish it wouldn't rain tomorrow.'

I can remember saying that as a kid, but at the moment it seems just a bit left handed -
unless you know it's going to rain.

It seems to work only when the thing you wish against is inevitable: "I wish you wouldn't leave."

I wish you would stop doing that.

Is this sentence grammatically correct?
