:: Is this sentence correct - Q & A

Question: Did you eat the cake?
Answer: I have eaten the cake already.

I would like to know if the answer to the question is correct. I was told by the teacher that adding the `already' is correct. But I do not really agree with it.

How about this answer: I already ate the cake.
