Is this sentence correct in Amrican English?

1)

a)There is a lot of them in there.

b)There are a lot of them in there.

2)

a)There is a lot of it in there.

b)There are a lot of it in there.

Strangely, 1a is in use, but 2b is not. It probably has something to do with the relative easy of pronouncing there's . Only 1b and 2a are 'correct', though.
