Is this sentence correct?

The statue I saw during the trip was magnificent. Standing in front of it, I couldn’t help wondering how long it took to build it.

To me, it is more natural to delete the final "it". Otherwise, the sentences are OK. In careful writing, I personally prefer to include the relative pronoun, "The statue that I saw", though in speech and informal writing these are commonly omitted where grammatically possible.
