Is this sentence correct?

Hello, could you help me to solve this doubt? Is the following sentence in bold correct?

"His artworks investigate the field of the psyche: this approach aims to deepen studies on perception..."

A friend suggests that it would be correct only this way and I don't understand why:

"..this approach aims to deepen his studies on perception..."

But...if I would insert "his" the meaning would differ from what I intended to say.

Thank you in advance!

Thank you very much Clive!

Could you maybe suggest a link to an explanation which could help me to remember why "to deepen studies"

is not working? (and "to deepen his studies" would be correct instead ?)

Thanks again in advance!

Thank you very much AlpheccaStars.

But it's not yet clear to me if it is correct or not to say:

"...this approach aims to deepen studies on perception..."

May it work or is it necessary to insert an article or an adjective in front of "studies"?
