Is this sentence correct?

I'm talking about my first painting, and I wish to share my feelings:

"I felt a strong need to create something by myself, not just consume."

Does it make sense to you? Thank you very much!

There's nothing grammatically wrong about the sentence; it sounds a little awkward though, "I felt a strong need(or desire) to create something (by) myself, and not just consume admire (other people's works)" Thanks Karan
