Is this sentence correct?

"He scouted the smallest present in the pile and slipped it into his pocket."

I wrote it myself. I'm not sure if 'scouted' is the right word to use here.

It seems all right to me. Of course, the sentence itself is not from ordinary conversation. It's more literary than that.
