No, that doesn't work, and it's not clear what you mean. Did you have in mind something like:
I spend a lot of time answering students' questions.
I spend much of my time answering students' questions.
Answering students' questions takes much of my time.

Yes, this is exactly what I meant but I missed time in my sentence. In my understanding much expects an object but a lot of doesn't. Can we then say:

It takes me a lot of time answering students' questions.
