Is this sentence correct?

Basically, movements of tectonic plates are accounted for earthquakes.

You might say they "account for" but I don't find it very natural.

The difference in the way Americans and Europeans write the date acounted for the miscommunication on the meeting date.

(I personally would write "was the cause of" but the other one is okay.)
