Is this sentence correct?

Hi!

After writing this sentence, i'm afraid it looks and sounds a bit clunky:
"...this was driven by his seeing of a drop of blood under a microscope."

Is it wrong?

It's certainly not very natural.

I changed it to this
"This was driven by seeing a drop of blood under a microscope."

Better?
