Is this sentence correct?

Is this sentence correct?

I thought he was in a worse condition than he was in. I thought he wasn't going to make it.

I think you should use past perfect in 'than' clause because the time of 'than' clause precede than that of the main clause, as in following: I thought he was in a worse condition than he had been. Or Simply: I thought he was in a worse condition than before. Or I thought he was in a worse condition.

I think you should use past perfect in 'than' clause because the time of 'than' clause precede than that of the main clause, as in following:
I thought he was in a worse condition than he had been.

Or Simply:
I thought he was in a worse condition than before.
Or
I thought he was in a worse condition.

Omit the in at the end of the first sentence. You can add one word if you like: I thought he was in a worse condition than he [actually] was. I thought he wasn't going to make it.

2) I thought he was in a worse condition than he had been in the former condition.
