Is this sentence correct?

I am reading some articles on internet.
And I see this sentence " They are accustomed to understanding everything the teacher says."

What I am confused is why "understanding" is behind "to"?
I have seen many sentences but after "to" should be verb or noun isn't it?

Can I use "They are accustomed to understand everything the teacher says" instead? Because "to verb+ing" is not familiar to me

Thank you for your answer.
