Is this sentence correct?

The fact that the forests of North America are shrinking almost as fast as are those of the Amazon Basin is largely ignored by the American people.

I think we should delete the 'are' after 'as fast as' but some people think it is ok. Please advise. Thank you.

It doesn't need to be, but it can be. It adds a little bit of parallelism but it's also clearly redundant, so it's just a stylistic choice whether to leave it in.
