Is this sentence correct?

Where could you listen to a writer reading their new book?
My student thinks it should be his or her book.
I need to explain why their is correct.

weird... can't we just say:

reading from his or her book ?

Yes, the "his or her" option is certainly correct. In fact, that would the the safer one to use on tests. "Their" (for gender-neutral singular) has a long history, but is still somewhat controversial.
