Is this sentence correct?

Based on stories from The Arabian Nights, as told by Madame Sheherezade herself, her husband, the sultan Rashid, has executed all his former wives on their wedding nights.

Is "as" necessary?

I think it should not be added. "...The Arabian Nights told by Madame ..." would be proper.

thanks

Hi, Based on stories from The Arabian Nights, as told by Madame Sheherezade herself, her husband, the sultan Rashid, has executed all his former wives on their wedding nights. Is "as" necessary? 'As' suggests that the stories are also told in other ways by other people, which is not the meaning here.
