As I was telling her about politics, I could tell that she wasn't paying much attention. So I said, "I can see this is not very interesting to you." "Is it that obvious," she smiled.

"Is it that obvious," You need a question mark.

"She smiled" means that she smiled the words "Is it that obvious?" OK, but it asks the reader for too much at that point and is distracting. It breaks the fourth wall by saying "See how clever I am, making 'smile' into a transitive dialogue tag before your very eyes?"
