Is this past continuous/ progressive tense?

I'm trying to remeber what the tense/ grammar structure is called for a sentance like:

"Swallowing his pride, Jack apologized to Sally"

"As he swallowed his pride, Jack apologized to Sally"

I tried looking up past continuous online but it said it would be more like:

"While Jack swallowed his pride, Sally waited for an apology"

"Sally was waiting for an apology, when Jack finally swallowed his pride"
