Is this passage clear and correct?

The Tarsans’ advance was spearheaded by the implacable giant turtles, but the Ergothians could not stop the creatures since no weapon in the imperial army could penetrate their shells. Realizing that it was futile to try to directly confront the turtles, Tol decided to lead a contingent of his soldiers in boarding and capturing them. While most of his troops maintained the pressure on the Tarsan mercenaries, Tol and his chosen men boarded the turtles, defeated the archers, and captured the giant creatures.
