Shortly after the war council, Winath met with the empress to inform her that she thought that Tol was in possession of a nullstone and was aiding the bakali army. Valaran then revealed to Winath that Helbin was secretly concealing the lizard-men from magical scrying by the emperor’s mages on her orders. Winath was stunned and confused by this revelation, but Valaran explained that once the Great Horde was defeated and Ackal V’s authority exhausted, he would be overthrown. To prevent Winath from revealing her plans to the emperor, Valaran was forced to kill the old woman by shoving her off the palace roof and making it look like a suicide.
