The Philippines is one of the 10 countries (the others being Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam) affiliated with the ASEAN. History says that it had always been invaded by big countries. Long before, we depended on our invaders. We could not stand alone, and we had no ability to fight for our rights, but as the time went by, our “national born heroes” rose slowly and hopefully, faced the crowd, and stood for our freedom. In their blood flowed the real characteristics of Filipino heroes, together with the attributes adopted from ASEAN. With their pens and papers, they fought for their ideals acquired through education. To wake the nationalistic spirit of their fellowmen, they wrote their comments, opinions, and complaints about the real status of the country at the hands of selfish invaders. Hence, we were able to reclaim our country’s freedom and rights, which had been stolen from us. Heroism and patriotism are among the attributes we have adopted from our ancestors in Malaysia and Myanmar.
