Hibernation in animals is an adaptive feature that results in a deep and long slumber that an animal does not awake from for a long period of time. Some animals sleep through the entire winter, while some wake up infrequently to eat before falling back into hibernation. In this type of slumber, the animals core body temperature drops low enough to almost match the outside temperature. Consequently, the breathing and heartbeat of an animal in hibernation slows down as well, thus reducing the amount of energy needed for survival. As a result, stored body fat lasts longer. Because this sleep is so deep, animals usually will not respond to noises or movement. As a result, they quite often can appear to be dead. While hibernation may sound unhealthy, it is a important survival component that animals use to survive the food shortages and extreme cold temperatures that occur in winter months.
