which of the following two sentences is the correct one?

1. the lake has lost 670 square kilometers in total.

2. the lake has lost an area of 670 square kilometers in total.

i prefer the second one, yet the first one seems ok too.

I would probably say, "the lake has lost a total of 670 sq. km in area

In everyday speech, I think I'd say something like The lake has gotten smaller by 670 square kilometers.
