Is the word "born" past participle?

I checked Merriam Webster and "born" seems to be an adjective
I think this is why it comes after the verb be "was". I thought it is a verb.

Yes, that is a common interpretation: a 'predicate adjective'.

I checked the page of a teacher and he says it's passive.

My grandfather was born in 1901.

But even with that, if it's a passive, the whole sentence is still in the simple past tense? Am I right?
