is this idiom or something?

"Who gave him his shoe in recognition of his achievements?"<< what's this supposed to mean? i have no idea if it's literally mean someone gave him a shoe or there was hidden meaning behind it. i tried to find idiom about shoe but i haven't seen any of it much relevant. Thank you.
