Is this grammatically correct?

I am always confused with tenses. Is this sentence grammatically correct? "My realization that each language has a unique spectrum begins with an unexpected encounter with XXX." As it is describing a past incident I was wondering that it should be "My realization that each language has a unique spectrum began with an unexpected encounter with XXX." or should it be 'had' as well? Thank you so much!

Anonymous As it is describing a past incident Then I expect this: My realization that each language has a unique spectrum began with an unexpected encounter with ***.
