Is this grammatically correct?

Think of a pile of bombs spreads across an area seven times the size of New York and reaching 13km into the sky.

I think spreads should be changed into spread or being spread.... what about your opinions?

Spread , as the past participle, fits here. Spreading is also a possibility. However, since you have added the third dimension of height, I think that perahps extending might be the better word.
